Livestock and crops subsectors play a pivotal role in agrarian economy of Pakistan. Livestock contributes approximately 60.56% in agricultural value addition and almost 11.69% to the gross domestic product (GDP). The crops subsector constitutes of 21.73 percent serves as a basic accelerator of growth in agriculture sector as well as overall GDP. Therefore, to analyze the performance of livestock population and area under crop, present study was carried out for in-depth trends analysis of subsectors. Time-series annual data were used to assess the growth and trends prevailed from 1991-2017. To analyze the nexus between livestock and crop subsectors growth rate formula was employed to assess the growth performance of both subsectors. The results of present study revealed that livestock population shows increasing trends over the time with some fluctuation in a few years. Whereas, the cropped area is also increase by the time with the few exception during the studied period of time. On the other hand the population growth rate almost equals to that of human population growth rate in Pakistan. The livestock production has a direct dependency on area under crop as to serve as a basis to fulfill the needs of food for animals. Therefore, there is dire need to increase the area under crop through using climate smart agriculture techniques to meet the needs of livestock production. Hence the study suggests a comprehensive policy intervention from the concerned quarters for the overall sustainable development of agriculture sectors in Pakistan.
