In recent times, there has been growing concerns about natural resource depletion and pollution related problems across mining areas in Ghana. This research presents a study on sustainability management of large-scale mining concessions, using AngloGold Ashanti as a case study. A top down approach (looking into arguments from different stakeholders) and qualitative interviews were adopted to gather information. Conclusions were drawn based on the disparities in the relevant opinions, perceptions, benchmarks and tangible developments. The company is operating under various standardized systems. Legislation and conformance to regulatory requirements are the main driving forces behind this practice. The company either saw the demands of the community as too high and cannot be integrated with corporate social responsibility or attributed them to global trends which they had little or no influence on. The community appreciates the company’s efforts concerning social services but still demand for more due to perceived revenue levels of the company. In conclusion, the company is doing well regarding sustainability management but can do more for the community. The government should act as mediator during early stages of mine planning.
