The present study has been designed to examine the antimicrobial activity of aqueous and organic extracts of powdered pod, leaves and flowers of an endemic terrestrial orchid Brachycorythis iantha. The extracts of Brachycorythis iantha were tested against the bacterial pathogens via Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris and fungus (Candida albicans). Antimicrobial activity of the Brachycorythis iantha pod varied from the minimum inhibition of 9 mm against Staphylococcus aureus to the maximum inhibition of 11 mm against Streptococcus pyogenes. On the other hand, antimicrobial activity of the Brachycorythis iantha leaves varied from the minimum inhibition of 8 mm against Pseudomonas aeruginosa to the maximum inhibition of 12 mm against Streptococcus pyogenes and Brachycorythis iantha flowers varied from the minimum inhibition of 9 mm against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris to the maximum inhibition of 12 mm against Streptococcus pyogenes. These findings states that the Brachycorythis iantha exhibits potential antimicrobial properties.
