In recent years, cannabis-based products have ignited considerable attention, specifically from researchers, regulators and society, due to the reported and potential therapeutic applications and the change in the laws relating to cannabis use. Medicinal cannabis has a number of therapeutic applications, inclusive of, psychological conditions, pain management of dermatological conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. The medicinal properties have been linked to the main phytocannabinoids, specifically cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The drastic rise in the use of cannabis products is due, in part, to the amendments of legislations regulating their production and application. Notwithstanding the advances made, the use of cannabis products is not without concern and controversy. Most cannabis products are not subjected to vigorous quality control, efficacy and safety tests, therefore there is lack of regulations, specifications and guidelines in terms of regulation of the finished products. The absence of clear specifications has resulted in a high influx of unregulated and potentially unsafe products in the market. Consequently, the end-user may be exposed to counterfeit, adulterated and potentially toxic products. This is further exacerbated by non-compliance related to packaging and labelling requirements set out by Medicine Regulators in various regions. Quality, safety and efficacy are the key pillars of product integrity, particularly those intended for public consumption. In this review, we describe the type of cannabis products, regulation and challenges associated with the use of cannabis products drastic use of cannabis products and highlights the potential health concerns associated with cannabis use. We also describe the perspectives of cannabis users and role of medicine regulators.
