Antimicrobial activities of five constituents isolated from ethyl acetate fraction of Bergenia ciliate were investigated. About all constituents exhibited antimicrobial efficacy on the tested microorganisms, including two human Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus) and four Gram-negative ones (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella Pneumonia). Of these constituents, the compound 1 exhibited higher antimicrobial activity levels as compared to that of other compounds. Beside that other compounds were also showed realistic antimicrobial activity. MIC and MBC of compound 1 was carried out by agar dilution method and viable cell count method respectively. These constituents were isolated first time from Bergenia ciliate which is credible as standard antimicrobial drugs. MICs ranged from 0.156 to > 10 µg/ml and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBCs) from 1.26 to 15 µg/ml. The compound 1 showed excellent antifungal activity while other compounds have least antifungal activity.
