Abstract
External commitment is a psychological survival mechanism for many employees. It is a form of ‘adaptive behaviour’ that allows individuals to get by in most work environments. Because of the cross-sectional design of the present research study it could not assess true causality, but rather associations between the variables of interest. It may be that the direction of causality is reversed; job satisfaction, job involvement, organisational commitment or work stress may actually influence an individual’s sense of involvement adversely.
