Abstract

Hardness of 99.7% titanium was improved in acetylene-ammonia mixtures at 1,250°C for 2 h. The flow rate of acetylene was set constantly at 0.4 cm3s-1, but those of ammonia were varied over the range of 0 to 12 cm3s-1. By using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer, TiC, TiN, TiC0.7N0.3, and TiC0.3N0.7 phases with the corresponding elements were detected. Knoop hardness (HK) of the sample was at the highest when it was processed in only acetylene. Their hardness values were decreased, but their surfaces became rougher, due to the increase of ammonia flow rates.
