Evaluation of groundwater quality in relation to solid waste dumpsites using water quality index in Maiduguri, Nigeria

This study evaluates the quality of groundwater in relation to dumpsites in Maiduguri, a total of 4 water samples were analysed in dry and wet for physico-chemical characteristics. Temperature, Turbidity, pH, TDS, and EC were measured using standard laboratory instruments. The BOD, DO, COD and NO3 were determined using standard laboratory methods. The heavy metals were analysed using the multi-wave plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer, (MP-AES 4200). The mean concentration of heavy metals in all the water samples ranged from 0.007 – 0.72 mg/l, The mean trend of heavy metals concentration in the dry season was; Mn > Fe > Cu > Zn > Cr > Pb > As, and all the mean concentrations were within NSDWQ standard limit except Cr. While for wet season the mean trend was Fe >Cu >Zn > Mn >As >Pb >Cr > Cd, and all the mean concentrations were within NSDWQ standard limit except Fe. The computed water quality index for the water samples ranged from 10.61-72.4, rated from poor to good water quality. Seasonal variation has impacted positively on the water quality as the concentrations of the heavy metals decreases from dry to wet season.
