Abstract
The construction industry in Nigeria plays a pivotal role in economic growth, yet it faces a critical challenge: a shortage of skilled labor. This study aims to identify the key factors influencing skilled labor availability in Nigeria's construction sector and propose actionable solutions. Through an extensive literature review and distribution of questionnaires to construction professionals in Oyo State, the study identified crucial factors affecting this labor shortage. Gathering 121 responses over five months, the data underwent meticulous analysis using both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The study identifies six primary categories driving the shortage: governmental inefficiencies, gaps in stakeholder engagement, inadequate resources, evolving construction practices, disorganized labor markets, and substandard wages. Addressing these systemic issues is crucial to unlocking Nigeria's construction workforce potential. This research not only diagnoses root causes but also offers practical solutions beyond academic discourse. For policymakers, industry leaders, and practitioners, the study provides a roadmap for industry transformation. Investing in training programs, modernizing construction practices, and promoting fair labor standards can foster a vibrant, resilient, and sustainable construction sector in Nigeria.
