Homegarden and coffee agroforestry systems are widely practiced in southwestern Ethiopia. Despite the practice and importance of the systems, there are very limited studies in the area. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess plant diversity and composition of homegarden and coffee agroforestry systems in Yayu Biosphere Reserve. Forest inventory and household surveys were employed to collect data. Overall 101 plant species belonging to 49 families were recorded, 74 from homegarden (37 families) and 57 from coffee agroforestry system (34 families). Herbaceous plants were dominant in the homegarden agroforestry system (51%); in the coffee agroforestry, trees (72%) were dominant. Homegarden and coffee agroforestry consists of 38% and 77% indigenous plant species, respectively. Both agroforestry systems in the study site have a high diversity of plant species. This enables the systems to provide varieties of function for the farmers. To maximize and sustain the multiple benefits that provided by homegarden and coffee agroforestry systems, these systems needs collaborative effort of farmers, experts and policy makers to improve the components, composition and arrangements of the systems.
