Performance Evaluation and Demonstration of Hand Operated Decker Type Maize Sheller to Small Scale Farmers, Tigray, Ethiopia

Deck type hand operated Maize Sheller is one of the technologies in maize production which is adopted and modified to solve labor and time efficiency, prevent seed losses and keep the intended quality of seed. Decker type manual operated maize sheller was evaluated and, verified. The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate simple /easy, effective, efficient and affordable Hand operated Decker type maize Sheller. Representative site and farmers were selected. it was conducted on 124 host farmers across 8 sites. Economic data and farmers’ perception were collected. Descriptive statistics was used for analyzing quantitative data. The simple statistical analysis across all the demonstration sites indicated that the Decker type manual operated maize sheller exhibited higher performance advantage and save more time over the Traditional practices. This partial analysis revealed that one birr addition investment in the improved hand operated Decker type maize sheller will provide 5.42 birr gain. Thus the use of this technology to shell maize is economically profitable. Different parameters were used to assess farmers’ perception on the Decker type manual operated maize sheller. Most of the farmers interviewed perceived that Decker type manual operated maize sheller technical suitable, time and labour saving, and has low breakage. It was, thus, recommended that further popularizing and scale out of this improved farm technology are quite pertinent.
