Abstract

Research towards molecular medicines development for non-infectious diseases such as cardio-vascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, neuro-degenerative diseases and musculo-skeletal joint inflammatory disorders (arthritis) needs a fresh impetus, in view of the developments in the assessment of the therapeutic proteins such as interferons, cytokines, interleukins, erythropoietin H, somatostatin, defensins, tumor necrosis factor, monoclonal antibodies, polyclonal antibodies, lectins etc. The new therapeutic strategies like gene therapy and cell based/stem cell therapy augment the efficacy of the various biomolecular proteins and their application towards clinical management of the diseases. These research areas also imply a shift in the existing paradigm of both the clinical and therapeutic evaluation.
