Preliminary phytochemical analysis of canthopanan trifoliatus (L.) Merr

Abstract

Acanthopanan trifoliatus is a woody liane belonging to the family, Acanthopanax .The plant is widely distributed in China, Korea, Japan and Russia. It is used in the folk medicines of South-east Asia as a drug with ginseng- like activity. In the present study, the qualitative tests were conducted to know the presence of cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones, lactones coumarines, flavonoids, saponins, steroid or triterpenes, sugar and polysaccharides, phenolic and tannins, organic acid, alkaloids. Alkaloids were not detected in the plant. Moreover, the flavonoids were checked by thin layer chromatography (TLC).
