Folkloric use of Lophira lanceolata in Western Africa for treatment of wounds and some bacterial-associated infections was investigated. In-vitro antibacterial activity against 5 bacterial isolates was done using inhibitory zone diameter (IZD), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of hydroethanolic extract of Lophira lanceolata (HELL) bark. Ointments of paraffin wax and povidone iodine were compared with ointments of 5 and 10% HELL respectively topically on excision wound model to determine the rate of wound contraction, epithelialization and anti-oxidant properties. IZD, MIC and MBC showed activity with all tested bacterial isolates except for P. aeruginosa. The results of the wound healing study applied by 5% and 10% HELL showed significant (P<0.05) increase in the percentage rate of wound contraction compared to the ointments of paraffin wax and povidine iodine. Epithelization time was significantly (P<0.05) shorter in HELL treated wounds with corresponding significant (P<0.05) higher levels of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total tissue protein (TTP), hydroxyproline (HYP) and lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to the wounds treated with ointments of paraffin wax and povidone iodine. This work indicated that Lophira lanceolata has a good wound healing properties and thus can compete favorably with ointment of povidone iodine for topical wound management
