ASSESSMENT OF WOMEN INVOLVEMENT IN CASSAVA BASED AGRICULTURAL TRANSFORMATION IN NWANGELE AREA: EMERGING ISSUES FOR GENDER GENERATION STUDIES IN IMO STATE, NIGERIA

The study assessed women involvement in cassava based agricultural transformation in Nwangele Area and discussed emerging issues for gender generation studies in Imo State, Nigeria. The study described the women farmers’ socio-economic characteristics, ascertained cassava production activities among farmers, assessed costs and returns on cassava production. The study also determined constraints to women involvement in agricultural transformation and discussed emerging issues for gender generation studies in Imo State, Nigeria. A total of 240 cassava women farmers randomly selected constituted the sample size, while structured interview schedule was employed for data collection and percentages, gross margin and factor analysis techniques were adopted. Results show that majority (54.2%) of the cassava women farmers were within ages of 31-50 years. The women earned N152,400 per hectare of cassava farm while benefit cost ratio of N2.0:1.0k was obtained. Lack of basic infrastructure, inadequate institutional support and poor attitude of farmers were identified as constraints to women involvement in agricultural transformation. Emerging issues for gender generation studies were discussed on cassava base agricultural transformation, mainstreaming extension training and contacts, as well as institutional and gender collaboration. In conclusion effective involvement of women in cassava based agricultural transformation depends on the extent issues and constraints identified with emerging issues for gender generation studies can be addressed. The study recommends government provision of institutional support and provision of cassava improvement inputs as well as extension training and contacts in groups.
