COOPERATIVE PARTICIPATION AS A LIVELIHOOD STRATEGY AMONG FISH PROCESSORS IN IJEBU-ODE AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION ZONE OF OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

The research was carried out to examine the cooperative participation among fish processors in Ijebu-ode Agricultural Extension Zone of Ogun State. Seventy five fish processors were selected using simple random sampling technique for both the beneficiaries (47) and non-beneficiaries (28) of cooperative societies. The gender result shows that 95.7% and 92.9% were female and married at the time of the survey. Based on their religion 40.4% and 67.9% were Christians while the remaining were practicing Islam. Their education status revealed that 8.5% and 64.3% had no formal education. The mean household size was 8 and 5 persons for 74.5% and 25%, respectively. The mean annual income was above N100, 000. As for the beneficiaries, the mean amount of fish processed increased after joining the cooperative society from 380kg to above 500kg. 95.7% and 89.3% were using cut out drum for processing their fish. The regression result on factors affecting total income shows that the lead equation was double log function with its co-efficient of determination R2 (16%) and its adjusted value (6%). The hypothesis result shows that t-test value of -1.09 and a significant of 0.53 which means that there is a significant relationship between the profit level of beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries.
