The paper asserts that there are certain basic necessities and needs that are missing in the Zimbabwean society. The missing components are within the social, economic and political spheres. In definitive terms, the paper argues that there are some basic needs, necessities and freedoms that individuals in society should enjoy are trampled upon. In a sense, the well-being of individuals are stifled and as such, the paper intents to argue for the establishment of human well-being. In order to reveal the missing components and eventual restoration of the missing elements, the Capability Approach (C. A) is utilized as a social reality barometer. The C. A, thus offers valuable ideas as it reveals the actual needs of people in society, assesses individual access to basic needs plus offers how to deal with the inadequacies if any are found. Effectively, this means that the approach argues for the analysis and assessment of actual access of individuals to necessities of human survival rather than relying on estimated economic figure growths that economists and governments normally talk about as part of socio-economic growth realized in a country. In effect, the C.A supposes that actual social, economic and political growth should be realized through individuals’ access to basic human needs such as food, shelter, health facilities, safe drinking water, and freedom among others. Development or growth, thus, is to be viewed as availing, providing and supporting of needs of individuals in society. In saying thus, C.A argues that growth should translate into actual action of supporting human existence. The paper therefore advocates that the C.A has useful ideas that are pertinent to social change in Zimbabwe.
