Abstract

In this paper, an attempt was made to study the implications of urban sprawl on the land-use and land-cover pattern of a typical rural region, located in the State of Karnataka, India. Raichur quickly emerged as a city with the typical promises of an urban image. The GIS and remote sensing based assessment of the study area reveals that the city is still juvenile and there is some chance to save it from the adverse impact of urbanization, popularly described as sprawl.
