Perceived use of social media by registry staff of federal universities in Southwestern Nigeria

Nigeria universities are experiencing changes in administration because of innovation arising from Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to promote effective communication and efficient administrative services delivery. Timely information flow and effective communication are prerequisite of efficient policy dissemination. However, engagement of traditional or manual communication to disseminate information is causing delay and cost ineffective. This study examines perception of use of social media by universities non-teaching staff of federal universities in Southwestern Nigeria. The study is descriptive survey and the population is 500 while 354 responded to the structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings showed that Nigerian university registry staff have high-level competence in social media activities. Twitter ( =2.75) and Facebook ( =2.70) have high-level of usage majorly for official and administrative tasks. The study concluded that the university registry staff took advantage of ease of use social media innovation to enhance information dissemination and quality of their service delivery. The study validates Diffusion of Innovation Theory putting innovation into practice owing to relative advantage over the existing method. The study therefore recommends integration and deployment of social media to university communication process with appropriate policy put in place.
