Abstract

Antimicrobial activities of some Vietnamese medicinal plant extracts including Premna integrifolia L, Terminalia nigrovenulosa, Pseuderanthemum palatiferumStreptocaulon juventasEclipta alba, and Solanum hainanense were investigated. Almost all extracts had antimicrobial effects on the tested microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis,Staphylococcus aureusLactobacillus brevisEscherichia coliPseudomonas aeruginose,Candida albicansSaccharomyces cerevisiaeAspergillus niger, and Penicillium cyclopium. Of these extracts, the methanol extracts exhibited higher antimicrobial activity levels compared to that of other extracts. The greatest activity was obtained with T. nigrovenulosamethanol extracts, followed by the extracts of P. nigrovenulosa and S. juventas. The results indicate that the methanol extracts of T. nigrovenulosaS. juventas, and P. nigrovenulosahave significant potential for use as traditional therapy. Further study may lead to a novel antimicrobial compound.
