Post harvest losses of rice from harvesting to milling in Ghana

Estimation of postharvest losses of rice (Oriza sativa) from harvesting to milling was carried out in Ejisu Juabeng District of Ghana to provide basic information important regarding the losses. Harvesting losses were higher (2.93%) in sickle-harvesting than in panicle harvesting method (1.39%). Threshing losses were also higher (6.14%) in the ‘bambam’ in the bag beating method (2.45%). Modelling the occurrence of Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) in Southern Malawi

Relative humidity and temperature, and Prostephanus truncatus trap catch data for Chikhwawa District in Southern Malawi and for the period 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2008, was fitted into a model of predicting P. truncatus abundance. Results showed that none of the climatic factors studied had a significant effect on P. truncatus abundance. In predicting the abundance of P. truncatus, the model underestimated the actual...

Genetic variability studies between released varieties of cassava and central Kerala cassava collections using SSR markers

Twelve released varieties of cassava and 24 central Kerala collections were assessed at the genomic DNA level with 36 SSR primers for genetic diversity study. The minimum number of SSR primers that could readily be used for identification of the 36 cassava genotypes was also determined. For the genetic diversity study, the similarity coefficients generated between released varieties and central Kerala varieties ranged...
