Abstract
In the present study, oil and arachidonic acid (AA) production by Mortierella alpine CBS 754.68 was improved through optimizing the effective factors. One-factor-at-a-time method was used to examine the effect of pH, mineral element, agitator spin and temperature on oil and AA production. For higher oil and AA production, response surface methodology (RSM) was used after one factor at time method so as to develop a mathematical model in order to identify the optimum concentration of the key nutrients. Compared to basal medium, oil and AA production increased significantly from 12 to 48% of dry biomass and 23 to 56% of oil, respectively, when the strain was cultivated on the optimal medium developed by using statistical approach.
Key words: Mortierella alpine, oil, arachidonic acid, one-factor-at-a-time, response surface methodology.
