The article presents the adaptation of the Reading Comprehension Assessment Test (Prueba para Evaluar la Comprensión Lectora (PECL) test, Ferreres, Abusamra, Casajús, Cartoceti, Squillace, & Sampedro, 2009)”, conducted in 2014-2015 in Cuba, in order to use it for the evaluation of children from grades 5 to 7, from the general education system. The PECL test is a paper-and-pencil test to assess reading comprehension of narrative and informative texts. The adaptation included a pilot study to evaluate the legibility of the texts and the vocabulary included in the test, the instructions to the subjects and the analysis of the psychometric properties of the test. Additionally, the effect of text type (narrative and informative texts) in reading comprehension was analyzed. A total of 1152 children (568 girls), from 10 to 12 years of age (Mean = 11.03, SD = 0.66), from five municipalities of Havana City, Cuba, were recruited. The pilot study showed the students successfully understood the instructions, the texts and the corresponding questions included in the test. The raw scores revealed the test showed an adequate degree of internal consistency, and the items showed adequate discriminative capacity as for to distinguish between children with high and low reading comprehension. There were found no significant differences in comprehension depending on the type of text (p <.001). The test showed adequate sensitivity, specificity (> 74%) and reliability (0.71-0.74). The results suggest the test and the corresponding norms obtained for the sample studied can be used in order to conduct standardized assessments of reading comprehension in school-aged Cuban children.
