The phytochemical analysis of the male and female plant parts (leaves, flower and bark) of Carica papaya was investigated. The analysis revealed the presence of some plant bioactive components. There was a difference in the bio-active component of the male and female leaves, both leaves revealed the presence of alkaloid, tannin, phlobotanins, saponin, flavonoid, anthraquinones, phenol and cardiac glycosides. Terpenes, chalcones and steroid were absent in the female leaves. Cardenoloides were absent in the leaves. The bark of both plant revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannin, phlobotanin, saponin, anthraquinones, phenol and cardiacgylcosides. The flowers of Carica papaya was found to be rich in all the above mentioned bio-active component except for anthraquinones. The moisture content of the plant part ranged from 4.04 – 9.57%, crude protein ranged from 7.58 -30.50%, crude fat range from 1.37 – 5.05%, ash content ranged from 12.21 – 15.21%, crude fibre ranged from 13.91 – 41.36% and the carbohydrate content range from 42.37 – 69.33%. The study therefore confirms that all the parts of Carica papaya investigated contains many biologically active compounds and thus have great potentials for its development as medicinal agent and the proximate analysis revealed the potential of the plant in animal feed formulation.
